"Practice Makes Perfect!" This sentence is really the truth.

Reading the Holy Bible today, Pastor Owen taught me an English word "providence", I don't understand what its meaning at once, and after asking, then I know that it means "God’s Will” or “God’s Plan"; listening to English through online video, there is a feeling of familiar and unfamiliar, and I am not able to convert the meaning of the English I heard effectively. Immediately, I found out that how could my English capability has become so worse.

After class, I saw Pastor keyed a vocabulary "providence" on LINE, and suddenly recall that Taichung’s "Jingyi University" in English is called "Providence University". 20 years ago or more, I had several assistants from Providence University in my Taichung office. Usually, during the interview, I would ask them: "What's the English name of your university?" If they could give me the answer, I would continue to ask: "What is the meaning of providence ?"

Because Mr. Chengui Chen, the former President of Providence University, is a good friend of mine, and he is a devout Catholic; he told me that, “Providence means God’s Children!” Originally, this school was a “Women's College” which was established in Shalu, Taichung in 1956. The founder Sister Marie Gratia Luking came from the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of -the-Woods in Indiana of the United States, and the school was restructured in 1993 into "Providence University", which has nurtured many good mothers and social elites.

The question is, what have I been doing these years? In addition to the obvious decline in the capability of English, many things seem to be unsuccessful. It wasn't until yesterday that I heard the news of the death of an old friend Mr. Tianlin Huang that I suddenly awake--I realized that it turned out to get worse that is because I persevered in “studying Japanese” for the past three years.

Mr. Huang once served as a chairman of the First Bank. After retired, he contributed himself to promoting the exchanges between Taiwan and Japan. In 2017, he was “awarded a medal” by the Emperor of Japan. Over the decades, I have also made a lot of efforts on increasing Japan’s fiscal revenue. At the same time, I remembered that I had almost forgotten the Japanese that I knew before, so I picked up the books to study Japanese with enthusiasm.

I got up at 5 o'clock every morning to recite Japanese vocabularies, read the structure of Japanese over and over again, and wrote the important words and sentences in the portable notebooks that I would be able to read them at any time. After three years, last year a certain day I got up from the chair and suddenly turned “dizzy” and almost fell; fortunately, I sat back in the chair again. Soon later, I saw a classmate who had a stroke to the hospital that made me alert. The conclusion of the analysis was: "I should not spend all the time which I must take a break on studying Japanese." Although I achieved that I can write the professional articles in Japanese, the price paid is nearly suffered a stroke.

Recall that when I was eager to learn a technique from my father at the age of nine, all the machine's technical terms that my father taught me was in Japanese, and we communicated in Japanese at work during the learning; as the matter of fact, I had foundation of Japanese. It was only later that American firms became my main customers; in addition, I also spoke in English only as attended the international conferences, so I forgot Japanese gradually. However, because my friend was given a medal by the Emperor of Japan, that made me intended to improve my Japanese skills, the fact is I am getting older and I am still very busy at routine work; so that it affected my health.

Because of the impact of COVID-19 last year, many conferences and symposiums were held online; I found that my English skills became very poor, and it often occurred the matters that I didn’t know what the other party was talking about. At the beginning of this year, my wife Linda Din mentioned that the church had an “Bilingual Class”, which reminded me of reading the Holy Bible with Pastor Press in New York in 1979—not only improved my English ability, but also whatever I did prospers.

Unexpectedly, today even a very familiar "providence" has forgotten what it means. It seems that the principle of "Practice Makes Perfect" is really necessary. Moreover, the most important thing is that after the statutory retirement age, subtraction should be used for eliminating those unnecessary things in your mind, not to mention the desire of learning what you have forgotten, but improving the ones you already have in mind.
